Overcoming Self-Doubt Through Autosuggestion: A Personal Journey and Preview of My Upcoming Workbook

Emerging from a dark cave into sunlight and water, symbolizing personal growth, overcoming self-doubt, and embracing confidence—featuring a couple with their toddler

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”Émile Coué

This simple sentence embodies a powerful technique that can reshape your mindset, rewire your brain, and unlock a level of happiness and resourcefulness you might not have thought possible.

I know this because I experienced it firsthand.

Overcoming self-doubt often feels like emerging from a dark cave—uncertain at first, but with every step forward, the light gets brighter. Much like the moment captured in the image above, stepping into confidence and self-belief is about trusting the process, even when you can’t yet see the full path ahead. Grateful to Laura for capturing this meaningful moment—a perfect symbol of stepping out of uncertainty and into clarity.

As we enter the fasting period before Easter—a time many use for reflection, renewal, and discipline—I want to share how autosuggestion helped me break free from limiting beliefs and self-doubt. This story is a glimpse into the transformative practices included in my upcoming workbook, designed to help you master authentic happiness and resourcefulness.

My Journey to Overcome Self-Doubt

By the end of last year, I felt weighed down by self-doubt and fear of failure. Despite having studied The Science of Happiness, knowing both the theory and practice, I still felt something unresolved within me—something accumulated over years that was blocking my progress.

I needed a reset.

So at the beginning of this year, I took advantage of the perfect timing for a fresh start—I committed to fasting, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. At the same time, I returned to Émile Coué’s book—a book we had actually bought and read 10 years ago—but this time, I read it with fresh eyes, a deeper understanding, and a true commitment to applying it.

That’s when the mental shift happened: I realized I had to focus on progress over perfection—just 1% each day.

Implementing Autosuggestion to Combat Negative Thoughts

Émile Coué, a French psychologist and pharmacist, developed autosuggestion—a simple yet revolutionary practice based on the idea that the mind shapes reality more than external circumstances.

He observed that patients who believed they were healing recovered faster, even when given a simple sugar pill. This led him to a key realization:

🧠 Your subconscious mind accepts what you tell it—whether positive or negative.

If you feed it self-doubt, it will believe it.
If you feed it empowerment, it will act on it.

The method?
Repeating one powerful sentence out loud every morning and night, 20 times:

“Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”

At first, saying this felt awkward. But soon, I noticed subtle yet powerful changes:

More confidence in my decisions
More resilience when facing challenges
A greater awareness of small, daily improvements

It wasn’t about pretending everything was perfect. It was about choosing progress over perfection—1% at a time.

Applying Autosuggestion Beyond Personal Use: A Parenting Example

As I practiced autosuggestion in my own life, I naturally started applying the same technique when guiding my son.

One day, he kept saying:

“I can’t put my trousers on.”

Instead of letting this negative belief settle, I gently suggested:

Repeat after me: I can put my trousers on, I just don’t want to.”

This small shift in language aligns perfectly with one of Coué’s key insights:

🌱 When we identify ourselves with an ability, the willingness to act naturally follows.

Rather than reinforcing incapability, this subtle change encourages questioning:
“Wait, why don’t I want to? Do I actually want to try?”

This method—redirecting negative self-talk into a neutral or empowering statement—is a proven technique for overcoming self-doubt and building confidence, not just for children, but for anyone struggling with negative inner dialogue.

How Autosuggestion Works (Backed by Science)

Modern neuroscience confirms what Coué discovered over a century ago:

📌 The brain doesn’t distinguish between real and imagined experiences.
📌 Repeated thoughts create stronger neural pathways.
📌 Your words and beliefs literally shape your reality.

Dr. Norman Doidge, in The Brain That Changes Itself, explains how neuroplasticity allows thoughts and behaviors to rewire the brain over time.
Dr. Ethan Kross, in Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, highlights how self-talk influences stress levels, decision-making, and performance.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) studies confirm that affirmations and autosuggestion help override negative thought patterns.

Simply put: Your brain listens to what you repeatedly tell it.

So why not feed it thoughts that empower you instead of those that hold you back?

How This Connects to Overcoming Fear and Living Authentically

Autosuggestion isn’t just about overcoming self-doubt—it’s a powerful tool for overcoming fear and stepping into your most authentic self.

Your Turn: A Spring Reset with Autosuggestion

Spring is often seen as a time of renewal, a perfect opportunity for a fresh start—just like I used the energy of the new year to commit to change. Whether you’re fasting for religious reasons before Easter, seeking a reset, or simply feeling that now is the right moment—because the perfect time is always today—embrace the energy of spring and begin with this small, powerful practice.

5-Minute Exercise to Rewire Your Mindset

1. Write down a limiting belief that’s been holding you back. During my fasting journey, I faced the challenge of believing:

“I can’t handle an entire day without solid food.”

Instead of reinforcing this limitation, I adapted Coué’s suggestion:

“This is easy, I can do it. I can handle everything I have to while fasting and only consuming liquids.”

2. Reframe your own limiting belief into an empowering autosuggestion.
3. Say your new autosuggestion out loud, 20 times.
4. Repeat this every morning and night.

Over time, your brain will catch up to your words.

Key Takeaways: You Are Always Evolving

🌱 Happiness isn’t a destination—it’s a choice you make every day.
🌱 Success isn’t luck—it’s a mindset you cultivate.
🌱 Confidence isn’t innate—it’s something you build.

And it all starts with what you tell yourself today.

Say it with me right now:
👉 “Every day, in every way, I’m getting better and better.”

Feel it. Believe it. Take action on it.
